Best Fiction
In a year when the issue of class divide occupied the headlines, how strangely fitting, perhaps, that our top pick is a vivid, romantic debut set in end-of-Depression era New York about a working class woman who enters the exclusive world of the 1 percent. Recalling Henry James and F. Scott Fitzgerald, this wonderfully engaging book won our hearts.

We loved Tina Fey before we read
Bossypants
and we loved her even more after we finished the book. As funny on paper as she is on screen-and maybe even funnier-Fey led the charge for a host of cut-up "memoirs." But her magnetic mix of insight spiked with self-depreciation sets a new standard for books by comedians.

A History of the World in 100 Objects
is not your average history book. Indeed, the author admits his mission is impossible. But it's also fascinating. If you are looking to dig deep into a subject, there are other great choices below. But for entertainment value, gorgeous pictures and a valiant thesis, this book almost does the impossible.
